BUSINESS MANAGEMENT OVERVIEW

A business management degree will set you up with the tools and the confidence to make it in the business world.

You’ll learn how people and communities can affect how businesses change and adapt, and get to grips with the power of technology to shape strategy. You’ll consider important environmental and ethical issues, and learn to lead responsibly and deliver value while benefitting society.

Our  business management course covers lots of relevant and exciting topics, including commercial opportunities and challenges, risk management, sustainable finance, data, marketing, human resources and change management.

Our programme is designed to prepare you for employment by bridging the gap between lectures and the real world. Working with our key industry partners, including Ernst & Young and TalkTalk, you’ll be focused on real business challenges, and have the opportunity to tackle a live case study with one of our high-profile business partners.

Through this programme you will:

  • Develop a broad understanding of the contemporary business environment and foster a practical understanding of the commercial opportunities and challenges facing businesses.
  • Manage risk and financial resources including how to assess, quantify and mitigate risks, as well as raise and manage finance for a sustainable financial future.
  • Understand the approaches used in analysing business data, including predictive analytics, regression analysis, time-series analysis, big data, and machine learning.
  • Explore the principal aspects of the marketing function, including issues of product design, distribution, pricing and promotion, with a focus on marketing in a digital environment.
  • Look at the core concepts in organisational behaviour and contemporary management theory in order to effectively manage human resources and change.

You can complete your degree in as little as two years, depending on your starting point and study preference. For example:

The International Foundation Programme will be taught at the UA92 Business School

  • Academic and English Skills

This module develops your academic English, critical thinking, research, and digital literacy skills in preparation for undergraduate study. It combines general language development with subject-specific academic practices to support your transition into higher education. The module is benchmarked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and assessments are designed to measure your proficiency across all four key academic language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. By the end of the module, you will be equipped with the communication and study skills necessary to succeed in a university setting.

  • Introduction to Numerical Techniques

This module builds your confidence and competence in working with numerical information, a key skill for success in Level 4 study. You will develop a solid understanding of basic mathematical concepts and learn to apply numerical techniques to real-world academic and professional contexts. Successful completion of the module demonstrates your ability to engage with numerical data and apply it effectively in problem-solving scenarios relevant to your chosen field of study.

  • Introduction to Research

This module introduces you to essential research skills required for academic study and inquiry. You will learn how to plan, conduct, and evaluate research using appropriate methods and data analysis techniques. The module focuses on developing your ability to formulate research questions, gather and interpret data, and draw valid, evidence-based conclusions. These skills will form the foundation for future academic research and informed decision-making.

  • Introduction to Business Management

This module provides a foundational understanding of key business and management principles to support your progression to Level 4 study. You will explore core concepts such as the business environment, managerial roles, and the evolution of management thinking. The module introduces the functions and responsibilities of management in contemporary organisations and encourages you to consider how these principles apply in real-world business contexts. It aims to equip you with the essential knowledge and perspective needed to begin your academic journey in business.

> Entry Point - Year 1 Modules

Contemporary Business Environment

You will be introduced to the contemporary business environment and foster a practical understanding of the commercial opportunities and challenges facing businesses.

Managing Finance and Risk

An introduction to the core issues in managing risk and financial resources. Learn how to assess and quantify risks understand how tools such as risk registers are used by organisations to mitigate organisational risk.

Managing in the Digital World

You will delve into the core concepts in organisational behaviour and contemporary management theory.

Data and Decision Making

You will be introduced to a range of approaches used in analysing business data. This includes predictive analytics, regression analysis, time-series analysis, big data, and machine learning.

Integrated Module (Integrated Year One only)

Designed for international students, this entry point will develop a greater understanding of the skills you will need to develop in order to successfully and confidently progress with your UK degree.

The additional module has been designed to help students develop their academic literacy, and research and communication skills in preparation for undergraduate study. The areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening will be covered. The Integrated Year One will also help students understand the institutional culture, practices and core terminology of UK higher education.

Integrated Year One students will study all academic modules with direct Year One entrants. Additional support and guidance, designed for international students, will also be provided.

The Integrated Year One accepts students with a lower academic level than the standard Year One.

Year 2 Modules

Operations and Sustainability

Get an in-depth understanding of operations management across service and manufacturing organisations.

Marketing and Digitalisation

Get to grips with contemporary marketing management, understanding consumer and organisational purchasing behaviour. You will also explore the principal aspects of the marketing function, including issues of product design, distribution, pricing and promotion, with a focus on marketing in a digital environment.

Human Resource Management (HRM) and Leading People

Develop your people management skills by understanding the aspects of contemporary human resource management including recruitment, culture and managing change.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the nature and role of innovation in businesses. With a focus on understanding the ways in which businesses can foster an entrepreneurial and innovative culture to deliver value to consumers and society.

Year 3 Modules

Strategy and Ethical Leadership

You will explore how businesses develop their strategic positioning and implement strategic plans to deliver this.

Technology and Business Model Innovation

Explore how emergent technologies are driving fundamental change across multiple business sectors. Specifically, how digital technologies, ranging from AI to cryptocurrency, are disrupting sectors and generating innovative new business models.

Sustainable Financing

Analyse the two dimensions of finance and sustainability. Explore how businesses raise and manage finance in order to deliver a sustainable financial future and how long-term investments in sustainable infrastructure, such as renewable energy, carbon capture and waste recycling, can be financed.

Business Challenge

You will use your knowledge and skills to tackle a live case study from one of our business partners.
